Today, on National Intern Day, we are celebrating the ongoing success of the Whitman Internship Grant (WIG) program—a competitive grant that provides funding to Whitman students who secure or build an unpaid internship opportunity.
Now entering its 26th year, the program has supported more than 1,500 students in their internship pursuits. This summer, the WIG program is supporting more than 90 internships in locations across the globe, including 25 in the Walla Walla Valley.
Any Whitman College student who is enrolled full time and is eligible to work in the United States may apply for this grant, either for a semester or during the summer months. International students who are permanent residents or who have received OPT/CPT authorization may apply.
Application for Fall 2024 Whitman Internship Grants will be accepted from Aug. 1 to Sept. 16.
Whitman students interested in learning more about the Whitman Internship Grant are invited to schedule an appointment with Nadine Stecklein, Assistant Director for Internship Programs.

While not officially affiliated with Whitman College, the retreat has made its home here since 1998. Activities will take place in multiple locations on campus and some participants will be staying in Whitman residential buildings. A culminating festival concert on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in Cordiner Hall will be open to the public.

Associate Professor of Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB) Brit Moss (pictured, left) and BBMB majors Megan Marshall ’25 and MinhThu Tran ’26 recently visited the Department of Agriculture’s Physiology and Pathology of Tree Fruits Research Unit in Wenatchee. They met with their collaborator Jessica Waite, Ph.D., assisted in an apple sunburn experiment in the research orchard, toured the field and research facilities, and learned about the techniques that the Waite Lab is using to improve the genetic tools available to fruit tree breeders and growers. The Moss Lab also presented some of their recent data on the molecular machinery that pear trees and corn plants use to sense and respond to the important hormone auxin.
