Division of Inclusive Excellence Annual Report
|
Feature by: John Johnson, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence
|
The Division of Inclusive Excellence was active and productive throughout the 2023–2024 academic year working to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism and accessibility at Whitman. The Division’s efforts for the year are summarized in a report that is now published on the college website (see below). Divisional efforts across our three primary functional areas, Identity and Belonging, Equity and Compliance, and Inclusive Excellence are showcased in this report.
As we work to advance inclusive excellence at Whitman, we want to invite anyone from the campus community to feel free to submit suggestions and recommendations directly to the Division at diversity@whitman.edu. We welcome your feedback and input regarding this critical work.
Read the Division of Inclusive Excellence 2024 Annual Report.

Professor Published Article on Firefighting Policy
|
Associate Professor of Sociology and Paul Garrett Fellow Alissa Cordner recently published a paper titled “External drivers of changes in wildland firefighter safety and policy” in “International Journal of Wildland Fire.” This paper is based on her multi-year participant observation research with firefighters in Oregon and looks at changes in wildland firefighter safety policies and practices. Cordner finds that, in addition to the triggering influence of tragedy incidents and agency initiatives, changes in policy are driven by external factors, including sociodemographic, material, political, and socio-environmental factors. Cordner also created a one-page overview of the paper.

LGBTQIA+ Employee Google Group
|
Some LGBTQIA+ faculty and staff are re-starting the LGBTQ+ employee email list that went dormant a few years back. If you are a staff or faculty member and you identify within the 2SLGBTQIA+ umbrella please join us. Send an email to Susanne Beechey at beechesn@whitman.edu and you will be added to the google group.
Note this is less formal than the Employee Resource Groups organized via HR and Inclusive Excellence; rather, this is an email list for organizing informal events and occasional email conversation among 2SLGBTQIA+ employees. If you have questions you can reach out to Susanne Beechey, M Acuff, Brit Moss or Kris Surovjak.
Students wishing to connect to LGBTQIA+ resource please contact Shelby Hearn at lgbtqia@whitman.edu or stop by the Queer Resource Center in Reid.
