Celebrating Our Recent Paul Garrett Fellows

(from left) Profiles of: Dalia Biswas, Maria Lux, Erin Pahlke and Andrea Sempértegui.

We are pleased to announce the latest faculty members to be awarded the Paul Garrett Fellowship.

As a liberal arts college repeatedly recognized for excellence in undergraduate teaching, Whitman is committed to supporting the development of faculty members throughout their careers. The Paul Garrett Fellowship is awarded to Assistant or Associate Professors who combine a deep commitment to teaching with active, creative scholarship. Fellows retain the Paul Garrett Fellow title until their next academic rank promotion, as well as a professional development stipend that remains an ongoing addition to their base salary.

Joining Associate Professor of Art History and Paul Garrett Fellow Lisa Uddin, Whitman congratulates the following faculty as new Paul Garrett Fellows starting with the 2025–2026 academic year (pictured, from left):

  • Associate Professor of Chemistry Dalia Biswas
  • Associate Professor of Art Maria Lux
  • Associate Professor of Psychology Erin Pahlke
  • Assistant Professor of Politics Andrea Sempértegui

Human Resources Update

E-Verify Implementation

Effective Tuesday, Dec. 16, Whitman College will implement E-Verify for all employment eligibility verifications in order to strengthen our hiring practices and enhance compliance with federal requirements.

E-Verify will enable Whitman to support the hiring and retention of employees on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Optional Practical Training (STEM OPT) extensions, establish a “good faith” safe harbor for Whitman and our employee community, offer better protection of sensitive personnel information, and maintain strong compliance with employment eligibility regulations. E-Verify also offers a more efficient electronic verification process for hiring.

The Office of Human Resources welcomes supervisors to one of three brief virtual information sessions regarding the implementation and its impact to the student employment hiring process.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 4–4:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Dec. 4, from 3–3:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Dec. 5, from 8:30–9 a.m.

Dates and times are shared for scheduling purposes. Zoom links will be released closer to the information sessions.
