The Importance of Internships: Embracing Opportunity

Feature by: Career and Community Engagement Center

As the academic year progresses and internship recruiting season peaks, it’s essential for students to understand the significance of internships in shaping their professional futures. At Whitman College, students are encouraged to pursue these transformative experiences and are supported by robust career resources, including the Whitman Internship Grant.

Why Internships Matter:
Internships have long served as a bridge between academic learning and real-world application. They provide students with invaluable hands-on experience, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings.

Resources at Whitman College:
Whitman College is committed to supporting students in their internship endeavors. The Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC) plays a crucial role in this process, offering a wealth of resources tailored to help students navigate the internship landscape.

The Whitman Internship Grant:
One standout feature of Whitman College’s commitment to internships is the Whitman Internship Grant (WIG), which provides financial support for students who secure unpaid internships. This grant enables students to pursue valuable opportunities without financial burden.

The Whitman Internship Grant is especially beneficial in today’s job market, where many coveted internships may not offer compensation. This initiative levels the playing field, allowing more students to gain essential experience. The application process is straightforward, and students are encouraged to apply early to secure funding for summer internships.

Professor Publishes Article in Christianity & Literature

Professor of English Christopher Leise published an article on W.E.B. Du Bois’s literary efforts to protect Black Americans’ voting rights at the turn of the 20th century. “Sacraments, Veils, and the Altar of Democracy: Calvinist Rhetoric in W.E.B. Du Bois’s ‘The Souls of Black Folk’ and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘The Minister’s Black Veil’” appears in the most recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal Christianity & Literature. Aliyah Fard ’22 provided critical research support and invaluable insights into the essay’s content and clarity; their collaboration was made possible by the generous support of the Whitman College Parents’ Fund via the Louis B.
