We know it’s a busy time on campus, but we encourage you to take a break from your studies and explore the incredible events happening during Sex Week, starting tomorrow!
This year’s events are spearheaded by Sexual Violence Prevention student leaders in collaboration with student club Planned Parenthood Generation Action and staff from the Glover Alston Intercultural Center, LGBTQIA+ Student Services, the Office of the President and the Culture of Respect team.
The week kicks off with a powerful keynote by Cheyenne Tyler Jacobs (pictured) on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center coffeehouse, sponsored by the Glover Alston Intercultural Center. (Flyer attached.) Cheyenne will speak about the experiences of women of color who have survived sexual violence and explore how harmful narratives and systemic conditions contribute to ongoing abuse. Her talk will challenge us to reflect on our own beliefs and offer strategies for creating positive change.
Sex Week will also feature engaging workshops and activities, including:
|
- Queer Love … Healthy Vibes
- Coming to Power: The Truth About the Vaginal Orgasm
- Sex, Consent and Cultural Media Stereotypes: How They Impact Us
- Cards for Humanity Game Day (with athletes)
- Survivor-Centered Tools for Responding to Student Disclosures (for staff members)
- Sex Ed Lotería
- Take Back the Night
- Looove Hub Pop-Up Fair
|
For the full schedule of events, times and locations, please see the attached flyer.
Much of the programming that we are offering this week is facilitated by our partners at Recognize Violence Change Culture (RVCC). We are excited to announce that Whitman has expanded our partnership with RVCC and will begin the process of launching a creative, transformative and student-powered movement designed to shift culture and establish new consent-centered norms called CHECK IT this coming fall. This is a game-changer in campus sexual violence prevention. CHECK IT empowers students to take action when they witness moments of harm (sexual violence, dating violence, stalking) and provides concrete tools for students to learn and practice consent, build healthier relationships and support survivors.
At the heart of CHECK IT is possibility—the understanding that our campus can be a place where consent, safety and accountability are the standard. It empowers us with the skills and knowledge to build that community together. When we return to campus in the fall we will start recruiting for our first cohort of peer educators that will launch this exciting program, so be on the lookout for announcements.
We look forward to seeing you out at the events this week!
