Justice William O. Douglas Lecture Tonight
|
|
|
The annual Justice William O. Douglas Lecture will take place tonight on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. (Flyer attached.)
The Honorable William A. Fletcher, a senior judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Richard W. Jennings Emeritus Professor of Law at UC Berkeley School of Law, will speak on the topic of academic freedom and the First Amendment.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton, Judge Fletcher has had a distinguished career on the federal bench writing important opinions on voting rights, the death penalty, Title IX, the Second Amendment and the First Amendment (including a landmark academic freedom case, Demers v. Austin).
The lecture will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Fletcher and professors Heather Elliott, the John J. Sparkman Chair of Law at the University of Alabama School of Law, and Elizabeth Porter, the James W. Mifflin Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law.

As we move into the fall and continue to engage with important and difficult local, national and global issues, we wanted to share a reminder of the values, policies and resources available here at Whitman.
Shared Values Our shared values of freedom of expression, academic freedom, inclusive excellence, non-discrimination, freedom from harassment, and learning in a welcoming community underlie all the work we do.
Policies In late August, President Bolton highlighted Whitman’s policies related to advocacy and protest along with some examples based on questions we’ve received about how the policies are applied. Now is a good time to revisit these policies.
Resources If you feel like you need extra support in the coming weeks and months, please lean on those close to you for support—close friends, family, and Whitman faculty and staff are here for you.
In addition, if you need professional assistance to supplement your personal support system, counseling resources are available for our students through the Counseling Center and Uwill Teletherapy.
Faculty and staff can connect with a counselor through Canopy, our employee assistance program.
Anyone who may wish to report a concern about identity-based harassment or harm can file a bias incident report.
Members of the Identity and Belonging team are also available for individual conversations or support for any member of the campus community.
