Whitman’s Reunion Weekend 2025 Makes History

Whitman College hosted its biggest reunion ever—with 777 alumni and their guests totaling over 1,000 people.

Classes for the 10th, 25th, 40th and 50th reunions spent the year leading up to Reunion Weekend gathering donations for the college. The staggering grand total of $5,253,578 was announced at Reunion Convocation, where alumni heard from President Sarah Bolton and our 2025 Alumni Association Recognition Award winners were honored.

Noteworthy

Debate & Forensics Team Bring Home Wins in Season Openers

Multiple teams of two from Whitman’s Debate and Forensics Team competed in tournaments in Portland and Salem last weekend. 

At the Steve Hunt Classic, teammates Cedar Tatarek ’28 and Anissa Cherif ’28 as well as Finnegan Motz ’27 and Nico Brenneman-Ochoa ’28 were octofinalists in the Open Parliamentary Debate. Oliver Kaufman ’26 also ranked fifth place in the Best Speaker category. Teammates Liz Lovett ’29 and Rory Daniels ’29 as well as Louis Stark ’27 and Valeri Garcia ’28 were the final two teams standing in the Junior Varsity Parliamentary Debate. Liz Lovett ’29 also placed sixth in Junior Varsity Extemporaneous Speaking.

Additionally, Oliver Kaufman ’26 and Heather Romero Michel ’27 represented Whitman at the Oregon State Penitentiary Toastmasters Tournament—the largest Toastmasters tournament to take place at a prison.

Second VPIE Candidate Forum Happening Today

The second of four campuswide forums to hear from finalist candidates for the role of Vice President for Inclusive Excellence (VPIE) will take place on Friday, Oct. 17, from noon–1 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. Two more forums will be held on Monday, Oct. 20, and Tuesday, Oct. 21. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the candidate questions and offer feedback afterwards.

 

President Bolton Hosts Open Office Hours for Students Today

President Sarah Bolton will hold open office hours on Friday, Oct. 17, from 1:15–2:15 p.m. near the Fish Ladder Sculpture in the Reid Campus Center. Throughout the semester, students can drop by these sessions to share their thoughts or just to chat.

 

Tabletop Club Event Tonight

The Tabletop Club will host a “Tabletop and Terrors” event on Friday, Oct. 17, from 7–9 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom (side B). Free drinks and snacks will be provided, and costumes are encouraged! Games will include Coup, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Mysterium and more.

Campus Vaccination Clinic Next Week

The Welty Health and Counseling Center is partnering with Safeway Pharmacy to bring flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to campus on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cordiner Hall. Whitman students, staff and faculty will need to bring a copy of their insurance card and fill out paperwork in advance to receive a vaccination. Most health insurance plans, including Whitman employee health insurance, cover routine vaccines at 100%. Students without adequate insurance will receive vaccines at no additional cost.

Ruth Iiyambo ’26 and Hana Nandawula-Bunnya ’28 presented their summer research projects titled “Analyzing the Evolution in Research Economics by Female and Male Economists” at the 2025 Consortium for Computing Sciences in College Northwestern Regional Conference. The pair spent the summer researching alongside Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science Sachintha Pitigala.
