Three Whitman alumni have been appointed to serve on the college’s Board of Trustees starting in the 2026-2027 academic year: tech entrepreneur Jim Edmunds ’78 (left), professor Mark Giordano ’88 (middle) and former NASA astronaut Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger ’97 (right).

Together, they bring decades of experience in tech, foreign service, education and science—as well as a deep commitment to the Whitman community.

This year, 184 Whitman student-athletes, representing each of the college’s 17 sports, were named to the 2025–2026 Northwest Conference All-Academic Team for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher while participating throughout the entire varsity season. Payton Davies ’26 (cross country, distance track) and Ali Efe Isik ’26 (men’s basketball) were awarded Northwest Conference First-Team All-Academic honors for their exemplary work in the classroom and community.

The Whitman men’s basketball team also received a Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches for maintaining a 3.3 GPA team average during last season.

In addition, the Whitman baseball team received a Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association for maintaining a team GPA above 3.0 for the season.

Most college offices will close at noon on Friday, July 31, as one of several discretionary staff half days scheduled throughout the summer.

A short way down the hallway, across from Olin Auditorium, is a new exhibit of “Underground Hornship” by artist Wangechi Mutu. As part of their senior seminar, Class of 2026 Art History majors proposed this installation site and wrote five short essays to provide context for the sculpture.
