What Is Justice in a Prison Town?

This semester, a dozen Whitman students have been taking a Sites of Justice (POL-482) independent study course co-taught by Assistant Professor of Politics Denise Fernandes and Visiting Assistant Professor of Politics Katie Heard.
The students have engaged with themes related to carceral climates, Indigenous land possession, surveillance technologies and algorithmic predictions of crime, the production of sex and gender identities through the infrastructure of punishment, and more. The course has also centered the lived experiences of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.
This week, the class will visit the Sustainable Practices Lab inside the Washington State Penitentiary—home to the Inside/Out Media Labs run by Unincarcerated Productions, an organization that foregrounds the lived experiences of incarcerated individuals as a means to build inclusive communities. The class will also attend the Justice Media Film Festival co-presented by Unincarcerated Productions at Gesa Power House Theatre on Friday, April 24.
For their final course assignment, the students will host a community conversation and fireside chat titled “What Is Justice in a Prison Town” on Saturday, April 25, at 3 p.m. in Baker Center. Their conversation partners will be Vik Chopra and Anthony Covert ’28, who are among the founding members of and creative minds behind Unincarcerated Productions. Whitman Tennis Continues Winning Streak
|
This weekend, the Whitman men’s and women’s tennis teams both won their second consecutive Northwest Conference tournament championship. With these wins, they also automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

New Fulbright Canvas Course Launching Today
|
The Fellowships and Grants team has created a “Fulbright Basecamp” Canvas course to support students and alumni applying to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. This course will complement advising from the Fellowships and Grants team and allow them to scale up their support. Questions? Black Queer Film Screening Tomorrow

The Gender Studies Department and the Office of LGBTQIA+ Services will co-sponsor a screening of “Rafiki” on Tuesday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in Olin 129. This groundbreaking Kenyan film was banned in its home country from its release in 2018 until January of this year. At this screening, there will be opening remarks from a Whitman student and a professor on the significance of film and the importance of highlighting queer voices and issues. Please RSVP in advance. Dr. Sylvia Carey-Butler, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence, will host an open conversation with students on Wednesday, April 22, at noon in Reid Campus Center’s Young Ballroom. The Energy Economics (ECON-294-A ST) class recently visited the NextEra Energy Stateline Wind Farm and its operations facility near Touchet. The students learned about the history of wind energy in the Walla Walla Valley, the mechanics of a wind turbine, and NextEra’s new and repower projects. They also discussed some of the local and global trends in energy production.
