Intern Studies Unexplored Regional Species

Portrait of Caine Ryan, with shoulder-length curly hair. Black text reads: “Learn it. Live it. at Whitman College”.

Caine Ryan ’26 is a Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB) major from Wilsonville, Oregon, who is taking his learning beyond the classroom. Thanks to a Whitman Internship Grant, Ryan is a Fish Culture Technician at the CTUIR (Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation) Mussel and Lamprey Lab, part of the Water & Environmental Center.

From spawning rare lamprey to studying Pacific freshwater mussels, Ryan’s work blends science with cultural significance, offering real-world experience that can’t be taught from a textbook.

Watch this video interview to learn more about Ryan’s internship experience.

Student Campus Climate Survey Closes Tomorrow

This year, Whitman will participate in the student survey from the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates. Degree-seeking students will receive an email survey invitation from Dr. John Johnson, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence arriving via helpdesk@naccc.org. Participants will be entered to win one of several prizes, including a new PlayStation 5. In addition, if at least 50% of all Whitman students participate in the survey before it closes on Tuesday, May 6, the Division of Inclusive Excellence, will sponsor a day of complimentary boba teas at Black Pearl Boba. Survey feedback will help Whitman assess the racial climate on campus for students.
