Student Voices: Gaining Work Experience on Campus
|
Recent grad Loela Dickey ’25 didn’t expect theater to shape her future, but that’s exactly what happened when she found a role at Harper Joy Theatre.
“I have never acted in a play or worked backstage on a theater production, which may seem surprising given that I’m a publicist and blogger for Whitman’s Harper Joy Theatre. I love writing, so it’s only natural that I’m an English major.
“On campus, I was looking for a job that would allow me to develop my writing and communications skills outside an academic setting. I also wanted a position that was largely independent and that allowed me to express my creativity. I heard about the publicity role from the box office manager and decided to apply.
“Although I have never been involved in theater, I have always enjoyed the performing arts and was excited to promote this facet of campus life to Whitman students. Not only did this position check all my boxes, but it gave me valuable experience that only benefited me when looking for internships or jobs after Whitman.”
Read more about how this on-campus job led to an off-campus summer internship with another theater in town.

Whitties are sharing it all in our multimedia blog, Student Voices. Experience Whitman and Walla Walla through our students’ eyes! Read their personal stories, passions and perspectives—from navigating campus life to mentoring and career prep, learning a new language, sharing fun club activities, living in the Interest House Community and more.
All students are welcome to share their Whitman experiences. Staff and faculty are also invited to nominate students. We’d love to partner with various offices across campus to support more student stories. Nominations can be submitted using the Whittie Wisdom Nomination Form.
