Finding My Place in Whitman’s Outdoor Community

Arden Hunt sits on a platform overlooking a valley at sunset.

Recent grad Arden Hunt ’25 grew up with a love for the outdoors. In the Outdoor Program, she found a community of Whitties ready to explore.

“Growing up in Bellingham, Washington, I was constantly surrounded by nature. My parents were always taking my brother and me on outdoor adventures—whether hiking after school, skiing in the winter, kayaking in the San Juan Islands in the summer, or camping and backpacking weekend trips. I cherished these fun-filled adventures with my family.”

“When I first came to Whitman, I was unsure of how my relationship with the outdoors would evolve over the next four years. Now, four years later, I can say, without a doubt, that it has only grown deeper. The meaningful experiences I’ve had in the outdoors have shaped my time here in ways I never expected. I could go on and on about all the meaningful experiences I have had outdoors since coming to Whitman or the opportunities that I wouldn't have had anywhere else, but more than anything, I want to express my deep sense of gratitude for everything Whitman has provided me in my journey outdoors.”

Read more to find out how getting involved with the Outdoor Program led Hunt to launch the Whitman Outdoor Journal and see photos from her outdoor adventures.

Whitties are sharing it all in our multimedia blog, Student Voices. Experience Whitman and Walla Walla through our students’ eyes! Read their personal stories, passions and perspectives—from navigating campus life to mentoring and career prep, learning a new language, sharing fun club activities, living in the Interest House Community and more.

All students are welcome to share their Whitman experiences. Staff and faculty are also invited to nominate students. We’d love to partner with various offices across campus to support more student stories. Nominations can be submitted using the Whittie Wisdom Nomination Form.
