Whitman Students Head West for Summer Research
|
This summer, four Whitman students will travel to Washington’s Westside to participate in two respected summer research programs: one focused on marine biology and one on cancer research.
Biology and French and Francophone Studies double major Francisco Elia-Benfield ’25 (pictured, right) and Biology-Environmental Studies major Emily de la Cruz Hofer ’26 will explore ocean life at Friday Harbor Laboratories in the San Juan Islands, while Interdisciplinary major Kenzie Bay ’25 and Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology major Ella Schneider ’25 will join cancer researchers at Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle.

Stace Sievert Helps Develop Resource for Queer Students Interested in Sorority & Fraternity Life
|
Associate Director Student Activities Stace Sievert recently contributed to the creation of “Queer & Greek,” an online resource for students who identify as transgender and non-binary who are considering joining a fraternity or sorority. The guide was developed by Stevie Tran, co-founder of TA Strategies, a company that provides consulting, education and training for organizations seeking to become more diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Geology Student Mapping the Ocean Floor
|
This summer, Geology and English double major Elizabeth Huang ’25 is participating in a three week exploratory ocean mapping expedition near Hawaii. The goal of the effort, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is to increase mapping coverage in unexplored areas in and around the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, with a focus on waters deeper than 200 meters.

Harvey Pool Closed Next Week
|
This week, Harvey Pool will be open only on Tuesday and Wednesday. The pool will be closed all of next week, resuming with the summer schedule on Sunday, July 7.
Summer pool hours:

- Mondays: closed.
- Tuesdays: open 1–3 p.m.
- Wednesdays: open 8–10 p.m.
- Thursdays: closed.
- Fridays: closed.
- Saturdays: 7–9 a.m.
- Sundays: 7–9 a.m.

Women of Color Collective Meeting on Thursday

Summer Dance Lab Students on Campus

For the next month, you may spot young dance students and their instructors around campus who are here for Summer Dance Lab. While this program is not directly affiliated with the Whitman College Theater and Dance department, it has been housed on Whitman’s campus each summer for more than four decades.
