Feminist Vision & Classic Greek Literature

Four actors on a stage. In the center, a figure with antlers leans down from a pedestal to another actor. On the sides, two archers aim toward the central figures.

The fall semester Judd D. Kimball Endowed Lecture in Classics takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. Award-winning playwright Ellen McLaughlin will deliver a talk titled “Feminist Vision and Classic Greek Literature.” (Flyer attached.)

Plays written by McLaughlin (right) have received numerous national and international productions, including “A Narrow Bed,” “The Trojan Women,” “Oedipus,” “Ajax in Iraq,” “The Oresteia” and “Iphigenia and Other Daughters”—recently performed at Harper Joy Theatre (above). As an actor, she is also well known for having originated the part of the Angel in Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” appearing in every U.S. production from its earliest workshops through its Broadway run.

Photo Finish

The “Topophilia Gates” sculpture, lit by the setting sun, sits in the bed of a stream.

Cascade PBS visited the Walla Walla studio of Whitman Professor of Art, Emerita, Keiko Hara, to learn more about her vivid, large-scale works inspired by natural landscapes. On campus, you’ll find her landmark installation “Topophilia Gates” (above), inspired by traditional Japanese temple gates that symbolize a passage from the ordinary to the sacred.
