Student Energy Is Vital to Campus Life

As we close out another academic year, we want to take a moment to recognize the many ways that students made an impact across campus and beyond.
A few highlights:
|
- Dragtastica brought bold performances and celebration to the stage.
- Lunar New Year featured the debut of Whitman’s own lion dancers.
- Taste of Africa created a vibrant celebration of culture, food and community.
- Power & Privilege Symposium created space for meaningful dialogue and learning.
- CHECK IT launch and programming engaged hundreds of students in building a culture of care and accountability.
- Dance events across campus, from line dancing to bachata, kept students moving and connecting.
- TriChella, Wallapalooza and Battle of the Bands brought music, energy and large-scale community celebration to campus.
- Student volunteers made an impact in the local community with hundreds of hours contributed through programs like Project Sidewalk, the Buddy Program and more.

- 108 active clubs and organizations hosted at least one event.
- 900+ events brought students together across campus.
- 21,025 total attendees and 1,839 unique attendees participated in campus programming.
- 43% increase in recorded service hours.

Staff Member To Participate in Indigenous Storytelling Event
|
Special Assistant to the President for Native American Outreach Jeanine Gordon will be one of three storytellers featured at “The Aunties” on Saturday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at Gesa Power House Theatre. A second storyteller, Mildred Quaempts, is also on Whitman’s Pášx̣apa Elders Advisory Council for Education. This event honors the women that shape, heal and uphold Indigenous communities through an evening of contemporary stories. Student and educator discounts available.

Chemistry in Art Gallery Show Today
|
Students in Chemistry in Art (CHEM-102) will host a display of their work today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Hall of Science atrium. In addition to viewing the student artwork, visitors will also be able to participate in some free art activities. (Flyer attached.)

Mural Unveiling Event Today
|
The Hispanic Studies Department invites you to “Tú-Yo-Ellos: SOMOS” today from 4–6 p.m. in the basement of Penrose Library. This exhibition showcases visual and sonic works by students engaging with themes of natural spaces and ecocriticism. The event will feature the unveiling of a mural titled “We Belong Here Too,” created by students from Walla Walla High School and Whitman as part of the community workshop “Demystifying the College Experience.” Student volunteers from the Career and Community Engagement Center and Unidos also collaborated on the mural project. The new issue of Azulejos magazine will also be distributed at the event. (Flyer attached.)

Ethics Bowl Documentary Screening on Saturday
|
The Philosophy Department and Whitman Ethics Bowl club will host a screening of the documentary “The Bowl” on Saturday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. in Olin 129. This short film follows a North Carolina team as they compete in the National High School Ethics Bowl, which challenges students to engage in respectful moral dialogue about real-world issues. Following the screening, there will be a discussion about the general nature of Ethics Bowl and information about how to participate.
