Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Events

Whitman College, Walla Walla University, Walla Walla Community College and Blue Mountain Action Council partner for an annual community celebration in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
This year’s event on Monday, Jan. 19, will feature:

- Inspiring speeches from community leaders
- Musical performances celebrating civil rights and unity
- A commemorative march hosted by Whitman’s Black Student Union—focusing on the theme of “Economic Equity and Justice”
- Opportunities for community engagement and dialogue
|
We invite you to join us in this important community commemoration. Let us come together to honor Dr. King’s legacy and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of justice, equality and peace.

Staff Member Begins Term on College Place City Council
|
Last week, Associate Director for Employer Engagement and Internship Programs Nadine Stecklein was sworn in to the College Place City Council. Stecklein was elected during the 2025 general election and will serve in Position 3 on the council through the end of 2029.

Movement That Matters Resumes on Tuesday
|
Whitman’s employee wellness program, Movement That Matters (MTM), returns in the spring semester, running from Tuesday, Jan. 20, through Friday, May 15. Five classes are offered each week during the noon hour: Pilates, Strength and Stretch, Power Pump, Yoga and Step Aerobics. To join, bring your $45 payment (cash or check) to the Student Accounts Office in Memorial Building, Room 233. Follow the MTM Google Calendar for an up-to-date class schedule. Questions? Upcoming Book Event With David Guterson
|
Bestselling writer David Guterson, author of “Snow Falling on Cedars” and eleven other books, will read from and discuss his latest novel, “Evelyn in Transit,” on Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training Next Month
|
The Welty Health and Counseling Center will provide suicide prevention training for our campus community in February. The QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) model has been proven to decrease suicide risk in communities like ours.

- Faculty and staff session: Friday, Feb. 6, from 1–3 p.m. in Maxey 104 (RSVP)
- Student session: Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 6–8 p.m. in Maxey 104 (RSVP)

Participants will be certified as a QPR Gatekeeper, valid for one year.
