Library Film Screening & Discussion

An illustration of three silhouetted figures standing next to a giant open book and the text “The Librarians, Directed by Kim A. Snyder”

Penrose Library and the Walla Walla Public Library will co-host a free screening of the recent documentary “The Librarians” on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. in Hunter Conservatory’s Kimball Theatre. (Watch the trailer.)

When Texas lawmakers seek to review a list of books, librarians find themselves as first responders in a national battle concerning First Amendment rights. Across the U.S., librarians face the impact of uniting against library collection standards that include restrictions on race-related and LGBTQIA+ content. Drawing on historical context, “The Librarians” explores the broader implications for education and public life.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the topics of censorship and information access and how book challenges have played out in our community. Panelists will include Kim Cassetto, School Technology Coordinator for Walla Walla Public High School, Heather VanTassel, Director of Library Services at Walla Walla Public Library, and Jack Jackson, Associate Professor of Politics at Whitman.
