Whitman College has been awarded a $1.5 million Humanities for All Times grant from the Mellon Foundation to explore how the humanities can help solve societal challenges by creating equitable and sustainable relationships with local community partners.

The grant will be used over a roughly three-year period to co-create community-based learning experiences for students and community members centered on three areas of focus: Indigeneity, immigration and incarceration. 

“This tremendous investment in Whitman and our community partners will create impactful,  hands-on opportunities for students, faculty and community members to explore these critical issues together and build on relationships that are vital to our home in the Walla Walla Valley,” says President Sarah Bolton. “We’re deeply grateful to the many faculty and staff whose hard work and great ideas led to this proposal, and to the Mellon Foundation for this opportunity to innovate and expand our humanities curriculum in exciting ways that will benefit both our community and our students.”

At the annual Athletics Awards Banquet last week, Whitman Athletics presented awards to more than 35 graduating seniors. The highest awards given to Whitman student-athletes are the Borleske Awards, recognizing career athletic ability and accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus and community as a whole. 

The Technology Services (WCTS) building will be closed and without electricity in June and July so that electrical work can be done to install an emergency generator to supply electrical power to the entire building during a power outage.  

Offices that are in the building will be relocated to temporary spaces or work remotely.

If the work is completed earlier than the end of July, the reopening will be announced. 

As a reminder, the Walla Walla Fire Department will be conducting a training exercise all day today at College House (behind Baker Ferguson Fitness Center). 

All Whitman staff members are invited to a Staff Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday, June 2, at 8:30 a.m. in Reid Campus Center’s Young Ballroom. Gather with your colleagues to honor retirees, recognize years of service milestones, celebrate the 2026 Janice Abraham Award recipients and enjoy some delicious food. 

Earlier this month, Whitman’s Triathlon Club participated in the 32nd Annual Onion Man Triathlon—an Olympic-distance race held at Bennington Lake.
