Are you thinking about applying for a Whitman Internship Grant (WIG) to fund an otherwise unpaid internship or research experience this summer? Don’t miss the final WIG Information Session of the semester on Thursday, April 16, at 4 p.m. in Reid G-02. (Register on Handshake.) Attending a WIG information session during the semester you apply is a requirement.
If you are not able to attend the information session, you can schedule a one-on-one appointment with Associate Director for Employer Engagement and Internship Programs Nadine Stecklein. Select “Whitman Internship Grant“ and “Whitman Internship Grant Questions & Answers” as the appointment type.

Biology Professor Receives Research Grant
|
Brit Moss, Associate Professor of Biology and Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology, received a BRIDGE-track Natural Sciences research grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. Moss’ project enables undergraduates to explore how plant cells are wired and tuned to detect and respond to the growth hormone auxin. They will use a programmable yeast system (AuxInYeast) to study the auxin detection machinery from plants ranging from corn to rice to pear trees. This work will provide valuable tools for both crop scientists and engineering biologists charged with helping to feed a growing population in the face of global climate change. The grant will support six research students over three years.

International Game Night Tonight
|
The Division of Inclusive Excellence and the Office of Global Programs will co-host a Game Night event tonight from 6:30–9 p.m. in the Third Space Center. Enjoy board games from around the world, or bring your own to share. Pizza and other snacks will be provided. All students are welcome! (Flyer attached.)

Community Item Swap Tomorrow

Residence Life will host a Community Item Swap event on Saturday, April 11, between 4–6 p.m. in the Nancy Serrurier Village courtyard (or the main lounge in Harvey Hall if it rains). Bring items you no longer need and exchange them for something useful from your neighbors. Snacks will be provided. (Flyer attached.)

Whitman Undergraduate Conference Next Week
|
The 28th annual Whitman Undergraduate Conference—a celebration of the scholarship, critical thinking, self-driven exploration and creativity of Whitman students—will take place on Tuesday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Classes will be canceled to accommodate this annual event that highlights student creativity and student-faculty research. More information, including the full schedule of presentations and posters, is available on the Whitman Undergraduate Conference webpage.

Poetry Performance Next Week
|
Actor and storyteller Darius Wallace will perform “Hold Fast to Dreams: The Poetry of Langston Hughes” on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in Olin 129. Highlighting the life and poetry of an early twentieth-century American poet, playwright and novelist, this free performance is supported by Whitman’s Visiting Educator Program. (Flyer attached.)

Senior Banner Designs Due Next Week
|
Are you graduating in May? The Class of 2026 is seeking design submissions for the official class banner that will be displayed at commencement. The selected design will also win $75. Review the design specifications and email your submission to Kathia Jimenez at jimenezk@whitman.edu by Friday, April 17.

Last Call for Spring Textbooks at the Bookstore

The Whitman College Bookstore will begin returning spring semester textbooks to publishers next week. If you still need any books for your current classes, please stop by the bookstore as soon as possible!

The Whitman women’s volleyball team will host a Spring Scrimmage Round Robin event tomorrow, with multiple college teams each playing several times on Saturday, April 11, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Admission is free. Sherwood Athletic Center will be closed for recreation all day to accommodate this event.
