2025 Power & Privilege Symposium
|
Feature by: Power & Privilege Symposium Executive Team

In a time of ongoing political, social and personal challenges, hope stands as more than an abstract ideal; it can be a transformative force that empowers us to resist and rebuild. Under the theme Reclaiming Hope: Resilience and Resistance in Action, the 2025 Power & Privilege Symposium offers a unique opportunity for our community to come together and engage in conversations surrounding pressing issues that shape our communities and the broader world.
Through dynamic conversations, workshops, panel discussions and artistic exhibitions, the symposium aims to highlight stories of resilience and resistance on campus and beyond. We hope these stories and experiences promote a holistic understanding in our community of the shared role we have in fostering a more just society.
If this year’s theme resonates with you, consider applying to be a 2025 P&P session leader by the end of the day on Dec. 6, 2024. We encourage all Whitman students, staff, faculty and administration, as well as Walla Walla community members, to apply!

Staff Represents Whitman at Statewide Gathering
|
Noah Leavitt, Co-Director, Career and Community Engagement Center and College Liaison for Community Affairs, recently participated in a Gates Foundation gathering on the Cowlitz Reservation as a member of the seven-person delegation from the Walla Walla and Columbia County Elevate Horizons post-secondary attainment initiative. The convening brought together several hundred people from Washington state communities and many Washington Native American tribes to plan for helping young people continue their education after high school and thrive.

Cases of pertussis (whooping cough), bronchitis, COVID and other respiratory illnesses are increasing. Persons at high risk for severe symptoms include infants, pregnant persons, the elderly and health care workers, but people of all ages can become ill. Help protect yourself and others by staying up to date on your vaccines and practicing good hygiene.
If you do experience symptoms of illness, please seek medical care, stay home as appropriate and consider wearing a mask if you will be in public spaces. Welty Student Health Center can provide some testing and support for students who have symptoms of sickness as well as provide referrals to off-campus medical care.

Help Rename Hispanic Studies Magazine
|
The Hispanic Studies Department launched Los Ojos De Whitman in December 2022. Since then, the magazine has presented rich contributions from Latinxs and Spanish speakers at Whitman. They are preparing to shift from a digital publication to a print version and are looking to rebrand. If you have ideas on new names for the magazine, please send your proposals to ojosdewhitman@gmail.com.

Staff Input Needed on Campus Wayfinding
|
Interested in campus signage and wayfinding? We are embarking on a project to consider the ways people navigate campus and would love your input.
If you are available to participate in a focus group via zoom this Friday, Nov. 22 from 1–2 p.m., please email Gina Zandy Ohnstad at ohnstagz@whitman.edu and she will send you the link. The session will be led by Selbert Perkins Design, who will ask a series of questions about your experiences and barriers getting to and navigating campus as well as questions you get from visitors.
While this opportunity is specifically for staff, there will be other opportunities for all campus groups to provide input. Stay tuned for more invitations.
