On Monday, thanks in part to a multi-year effort by Andrea Dobson, Associate Professor of Astronomy and General Studies at Whitman College, Gonzaga University installed a new chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Dobson was appointed by Phi Beta Kappa as a reviewer on the project and received high praise at the ceremony for her contributions.
Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. For more than 200 years, the society has pursued its mission of fostering and recognizing excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Phi Beta Kappa members include 17 U.S. presidents, 42 U.S. Supreme Court justices and more than 150 Nobel laureates. Only 10% of all colleges and universities in the country have been awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, and only about 10% of their students receive invitations to join.
Installed in 1920, Whitman College’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter is the second oldest in the Pacific Northwest. Dobson currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the chapter. Whitman Phi Beta Kappa students are recognized and listed in the program at commencement.
