The path to medical school begins long before application season—almost from students’ first steps on campus at Whitman College. 

“The pre-health advising has been really great,” says Marika Cartier ’26 (pictured), a Biology major from Redmond, Washington. “Kimberly Mueller has been an amazing advisor to me. She’s helped me so much, walking me through the process over four years and preparing me to apply to medical school.” 

For students interested in pre-med and health professions, Mueller directs Whitman’s Office of Health Professions Advising and offers one-on-one support to help students prepare to apply to medical school, dental school, veterinary school and other health-focused postgraduate programs. Through a combination of courses, internships, volunteer opportunities, research partnerships, student clubs, and more, Whitman’s pre-med and pre-health advising is designed to turn students into competitive applicants and well-rounded health care professionals.

Dr. Sylvia Carey-Butler, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence, will lead a workshop for faculty and staff on “Building an Inclusive Community” with two sessions on Wednesday, April 1, from 2–4 p.m. and on Thursday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to noon in Memorial Building, Room 331. Each identical session will explore strategies, practices and perspectives that foster belonging, equity and meaningful engagement across campus communities. The final screening in the “Global Ecocinema: Environmental Storytelling and Social Justice Through Visual Media” series—the Chinese film “Under the Dome” (2015)—will be screened on Thursday, April 2, at 4 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. This series is made possible with the support of a Global Dialogues Faculty Development Grant and the Center for Global Studies at Whitman College, in collaboration with the Departments of Hispanic Studies and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. Applications for the inaugural cohort of the Summer in Seattle program are currently being accepted. Students need to have secured an internship or research position in Seattle to be eligible. Interested students who have not secured a Seattle position yet, are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a Career Coach in the Career and Community Engagement Center. Applications received by Monday, April 6, will receive priority consideration. Additional applications will be accepted through Friday, May 15. 

Current Whitman students are invited to attend Whitties Helping Whitties, hosted by the Career and Community Engagement Center and Alumni Relations, on Friday, April 10, from 4–5:30 p.m. at Cordiner Hall. This event is a great opportunity to connect with other students and build your professional network with Whitman alumni. During spring break, the SSRA-342-B Wilderness Expedition: Backpacking course run through the Outdoor Program went on a backpacking trip to the Robber's Roost canyon complex in central southern Utah. Ten students and their instructors traveled in the canyons for six days with nothing but the gear in their packs. The course focuses on outdoor living skills, navigation, group dynamics, risk management and emergency response. See more photos on Instagram.
