Whitties Earn Prestigious Fellowships & Grants

A collage of nine student portraits.

Each year, dozens of Whitman College students and alumni earn competitive grants, fellowships and scholarships that support their academic, research and career goals on and beyond campus. With the guidance of the Fellowships and Grants team in the Career and Community Engagement Center, these Whitties have been recognized for their achievements in academics, leadership and community engagement.

“We are proud of all the students and alumni who demonstrated courage and initiative by applying for fellowships and grants this year,” says Dr. Jess Hernandez, Director for Fellowships and Grants. “These recipients are truly forces to be reckoned with, and I’m excited to see how they will draw on their Whitman experiences and these incredible fellowship opportunities to build ethical and meaningful lives of purpose.”

Economics Professor Publishes Criminal Justice Paper

Assistant Professor of Economics Jason Ralston recently published an article in Review of Law and Economics titled “Bias, Trust and Trustworthiness: An Experimental Study of Post Justice System Outcomes.” The paper examines discriminatory behavior of experimental participants who are given the opportunity to base an investment or employment decision on a person’s criminal record. Discrimination occurred regardless of whether the person was convicted or acquitted, raising concerns about the practice of using criminal records in hiring. Additionally, the participants with a criminal conviction or acquittal were as trustworthy as those without, suggesting that the discrimination they faced was unwarranted.

Upcoming Discover Whitman Days

Summer is a great time for prospective students and their guests to visit our campus and learn more about Whitman College. The Office of Admission is hosting two Discover Whitman visit days on Friday, July 18, and Friday, Aug. 8. Whatever your role at Whitman, you have a vital role to play in welcoming potential students. Here are a few ways to help:

  • Smile! Be ready to turn a friendly face to people you pass on campus.
  • Wear your Whitman gear on these event days.
  • Be conscientious about parking. Please do not park in the spaces labeled for events or anywhere that blocks campus sidewalks or pathways.

Thank you to everyone who engages with these students from the initial point of contact through their upcoming visits and decisions, answering questions, and sharing what you love about Whitman.
