Team Bonding With the Outdoor Program

Split image: The women’s basketball team (top) and men’s basketball team (bottom), each group posing outdoors with a “Whitman Blues” flag.

At the start of the fall semester, both of Whitman’s basketball teams partnered with the Outdoor Program (OP) for an outdoor trip to help the team bond in anticipation of their upcoming seasons.

The women’s basketball team (top) enjoyed a day of stand-up paddleboarding at Jubilee Lake.

“A big thank-you to the Outdoor Program and our guides Anna, Annie and Allen for such a fun day!” says Head Women's Basketball Coach Michelle Ferenz. “It was a great way to let our team start their journey together while exploring one of the things that makes Whitman College so special: our location. We plan to do it again next year."

The men’s basketball team (bottom) traveled to Banks Lake for a day of flatwater kayaking.

“This OP trip marks the fourth consecutive year the men’s basketball program has benefited from the resources the OP provides our students,” says Head Men’s Basketball Coach John Lamanna. “I can’t express enough my gratitude to the generous donors who help fund the Bob Carson Outdoor Program Fund that makes these trips available to all Whitman students.”

Both excursions provided an opportunity to welcome new players and build friendships in a noncompetitive and relaxed environment.

Campus Event Promotion Ideas

Want to promote your upcoming Whitman event on campus? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Website calendar: Submit your event to the website calendar at calendar.whitman.edu. Be sure to include a photo or other image to help your event stand out from the crowd.
  • Whitman Today: Email whitmantoday@whitman.edu to submit your event announcement to the Whitman Today newsletter.
  • Listservs: If your event is sponsored by an official Whitman entity (department, office, student club, interest house, etc.), you can email your event information to the Campus Announcements listserv (campus-announcements@whitman.edu) which reaches most Whitman students, faculty and staff.
  • Posters: Start with a poster template provided by the Office of Communications or create your own design. Then fill out this form to have it printed and distributed across campus.
  • Local advertising: If your event is open to the general public, the Office of Communications can also assist with placing ads in the Union-Bulletin and on Northwest Public Broadcasting.

Be creative! Think about how you’ve learned about other events happening on campus: word of mouth, tabling at Cleveland Commons, social media, etc.

Penrose Library Operations Update

Although Penrose Library experienced some flooding this past weekend, it has returned to normal operations. The Whitman College and Northwest Archives will remain closed through Wednesday, Oct. 1, to allow time for the carpet to dry. (The collections were not impacted.)

Reading Salon Today at Penrose Library

Penrose Library will host a Reading Salon (Bring Your Own Book Club) event on the last Tuesday of the month from 4–5 p.m. in the games lounge on the first floor. Bring a book and enjoy the company of other readers. Snacks will be provided. Library staff are happy to provide book recommendations if needed. (Flyer attached.)

Oxford University Information Session on Thursday

Off-Campus Studies will host a webinar for students interested in studying abroad at Oxford University on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. in Olin 301. In the recent past, Whitman has sent students in a variety of majors to several Oxford colleges. In the “Oxbridge” model of education, students work one-on-one with faculty tutors researching very specific topics related to their major.

Vaccination Clinic Next Month

The Welty Health and Counseling Center is partnering with Safeway Pharmacy to bring flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to campus on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cordiner Hall. Whitman students, staff and faculty will need to bring their insurance card and fill out paperwork in advance to receive a vaccination. Most health insurance plans, including Whitman employee health insurance, cover routine vaccines at 100%.
