Testing New Locations for Free Expression
|
By the Student Conduct Committee
|
Last spring, the Student Conduct Committee assembled a task force of faculty, staff and students to explore whether the tennis court fence continues to be the best location for free expression on campus. During the fall semester, the task force met with campus stakeholders, spoke with students, distributed a survey and identified potential alternatives.
This semester, as the next step in the evaluation process, two alternative locations will be tested on a trial basis.
The first location is indicated by temporary fencing at the northwest corner of Cleveland Commons (pictured). Anything posted on the fence should be removed by the poster by the last day of the first trial period, ending on Thursday, Feb. 12.
A second location will then be tested at the southeast corner of Penrose Library. Temporary fencing will be installed there from Feb. 13 through April 3.
A QR code located at each of these spaces will provide a mechanism for feedback. Throughout this trial period, the tennis court fence will not be an appropriate place for free expression. Any items posted there will be removed.
The task force will submit a final recommendation for a permanent location to the cabinet by the end of spring break.

Health-Related Emergency Response
|
As the semester begins, please review this important information about notifying emergency services and campus first responders during health-related incidents.
For health-related emergencies (difficulty breathing, change in mental status, etc.):
|
- Call 911. Provide detailed information about the incident and your location.
- Immediately after the call, notify campus security at 509-527-5777 (or 5777 from a campus phone) and provide the same information.
- Assist the individual as best you can until help arrives.
|
If you are ever unsure whether to make a call, always contact campus security. Our security staff are certified in first aid, CPR and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator). After assessing the situation, they will call 911 if further assistance is necessary.
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring a safe and secure campus.

Assistant Professor of Astronomy Jessica Sutter (far right) recently accompanied a group of eight Astronomy students to Phoenix, Arizona for AAS 247—the 247th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS). This joint conference with the AAS Historical Astronomy Division featured a variety of scientific presentations, workshops, town halls and more. Seven of the Whitman students presented the results of summer research projects in poster sessions.
