Summer is a great time for prospective students and their guests to visit Whitman’s campus and learn more about our community. The Office of Admission will host two Discover Whitman Day events on Friday, July 10, and Friday, Aug. 7.
Whatever your role at Whitman, you have a vital role to play in welcoming potential students. Here are a few ways to help:

- Smile! Be ready to turn a friendly face to people you pass on campus.
- Wear your Whitman gear on these event days.
- Be conscientious about parking. Please do not park in the spaces labeled for events or anywhere that blocks campus sidewalks or pathways.

Physics Professor Presents at International Conference
|
Andrés Aragoneses, the Benjamin Brown Associate Professor of Physics, presented his latest research at the Entropy 2026: Exploring Complexity and Information in Science conference in Barcelona. He presented a newly developed framework for Complex Systems Linguistics, created in collaboration with researchers at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Terrassa, Spain. The framework allows the analysis of the time series of virtually any dynamical system, including brain EEGs, stock markets, photonic neurons, variable stars and even potential extraterrestrial signals, by transforming them into sequences of symbols that can be studied using the methods of quantitative linguistics.

Outdoor Program Hike on Saturday
|
The Outdoor Program will host a day hike on the Umatilla Rim Trail on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sign up in advance online. If you have any remaining 2025–2026 Bob Carson Outdoor Program Funds, they may be used to cover the $35 trip fee. All required trip gear is included.

Summer Food Support Survey for Students
|
The Division of Inclusive Excellence is exploring a partnership with Blue Mountain Action Council (BMAC) to provide free food boxes to students who may benefit from additional food support during the summer months. Students’ circumstances vary, and access to nutritious food is an important part of supporting personal well-being and academic success.
To help the division determine the level of interest and plan appropriately, students are invited to complete this brief interest form if they would like to be considered for this summer resource. Responses will be kept confidential and used only to guide planning for this initiative.

All submissions are welcome! If you have accomplishments to celebrate, an event to publicize or other Whitman content to share, email whitmantoday@whitman.edu. Submissions of 125 words or less are due by noon on the business day prior to publication. Submissions may be edited and/or held for a later date according to space and editorial needs. Your submission also authorizes use on Whitman's social media unless otherwise specified.
