Connect With Purpose at Community Learning Days

This summer, national narratives about higher education emphasize government interventions, shrinking budgets and rapid technological change. At the upcoming Community Learning Days event on Friday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom, Whitman staff and faculty are invited to center a different perspective—focusing on the stories that bring us to our work as educators and reflecting on how they inspire innovations that foster relationality and justice.

“Stories of Innovation” will be facilitated by Gladys Rowe, Ph.D., a Muskego Inniniw Iskwew (Swampy Cree woman) from Fox Lake Cree Nation, currently living on the lands of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples in Washington state. Rowe’s work weaves together Indigenous wisdom and experiences, storytelling, and academic knowledge, while focusing on decolonization and resurgence.

The workshop will explore how Indigenous approaches to innovation and the stories we carry can transform institutions from within—toward deeper authenticity, accountability and right relationship. Participants will learn about centering respect, responsibility, reciprocity and relationality as we experience and pursue change. In addition to learning from Rowe’s stories, participants will connect with their purpose, gifts and relationships through individual or communal reflection and a playful, hands-on creative process.

Community Learning Days is a biannual event, sponsored by the Division of Inclusive Excellence and the Inclusive Excellence Council, that provides valuable learning opportunities at the start of each semester. All Whitman staff and faculty are invited to attend but should register in advance.
