Whitman Receives Grant for Rooftop Solar

An artist rendering of what the three Junior-Senior Village apartments will look like.

Whitman College has received a major grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce through its Clean Energy Community Grants program to support the installation of solar panels on the roofs of the new Junior-Senior Village apartments. The project will decrease reliance on fossil fuels, lower electricity costs and contribute to regional sustainability efforts. It also serves as a tangible demonstration of the college’s commitment to environmental stewardship, providing educational opportunities and fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility among future leaders.

The $587,720 grant is funded by Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, which supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs and improving public health.

Reservations for living in the Junior-Senior Village apartments this fall are currently more than 80% filled. If you are interested in joining this new community or would like help in being paired with a roommate group, please email studenthousing@whitman.edu or come by the Residence Life and Housing Office in Memorial 130.
