Take a Break at Destress Fest

The Welty Health and Counseling Center—in collaboration with the Wellness House, the Outdoor Program, Inclusive Excellence and Penrose Library—will host Destress Fest on Tuesday, May 12, from noon–1:30 p.m. outside Cleveland Commons.

Stress is high for students this time of year. Destress Fest is a chance to take a break from studying and academics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stress can contribute to physical and mental health issues, impacting a person’s overall wellness.
Stress management is crucial in not only helping students manage their mental health, but to also help them continue to be successful in their academics and work.

To facilitate the release of some of the stress of finals, Destress Fest this spring will focus on play and fun activities for all students to participate in. Planned activities include friendship bracelet making, cat’s cradle, three-wheel bikes, lawn games, stress ball making, pop-up picture books, bowling and more. These are all graciously provided by our collaborators, and we hope that students will engage in this fun opportunity to take a break from the stress of studying.
Wellness isn’t limited to the work at Welty, but is instead a collaborative effort between all offices and departments at Whitman to support the well-being of our students.

Monday is the last day of classes for the semester and Whitman Today will be moving to its reduced schedule through the summer months—published on Mondays and Thursdays. Submitted content is due by noon of the previous business day.

Ethics Bowl Documentary Screening Tomorrow
|
The Philosophy Department and Whitman Ethics Bowl club will host a screening of the documentary “The Bowl” on Saturday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. in Olin 129. This short film follows a North Carolina team as they compete in the National High School Ethics Bowl, which challenges students to engage in respectful moral dialogue about real-world issues. Following the screening, there will be a discussion about the general nature of Ethics Bowl and information about how to participate.

Senior First Destination Survey
|
The Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC) invites graduating seniors to share your post-Whitman career and academic plans through the Senior First Destination Survey in Handshake. The CCEC uses this information to support Whitman students who are considering similar trajectories, including specific graduate school programs and future employers. (Flyer attached.)

On Monday, the Ordinary Law class (POL-202) taught by Visiting Assistant Professor of Politics Katie Heard took a field trip to the Walla Walla County Courthouse. Students observed court proceedings and talked with judges, defense attorneys, and prosecutors about procedures and processes related to criminal and civil trials.
