Psychology Honors Thesis Research Published in Journal Of Homosexuality
Recent Psychology alums Xaaran Dolence ’23, Bethany Hermann ’23 and Isabel Mullins ’23, together with Professor of Psychology Pavel S. Blagov, have published the students’ honors thesis in the peer-reviewed Journal of Homosexuality. This research was informed by the theory of belonging and the minority stress model, according to which being part of a sexual or gender minority group confers unique minority stressors (like experiences with anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination) as well as potential identity-based strengths (like being connected to the LGBTQ+ community). The students recruited 461 adult LGBTQ+ participants online and tested a process model, according to which discrimination impacts the experience of generalized anxiety symptoms in LGBTQ+ persons through rejection sensitivity as an intervening or process variable. Additionally, the students tested the buffering hypothesis that connectedness to the LGBTQ+ community would serve as a protective factor against the effects of discrimination and rejection sensitivity on generalized anxiety in this population.

Student Campus Climate Survey Closes Today
This year, Whitman will participate in the student survey from the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates. Degree-seeking students will receive an email survey invitation from Dr. John Johnson, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence arriving via helpdesk@naccc.org. Participants will be entered to win one of several prizes, including a new PlayStation 5. In addition, if at least 50% of all Whitman students participate in the survey before it closes on Tuesday, May 6, the Division of Inclusive Excellence, will sponsor a day of complimentary boba teas at Black Pearl Boba. Survey feedback will help Whitman assess the racial climate on campus for students.
