Welty Health & Counseling Center: November Update
|
By Michelle Shin ’23, Prevention Specialist
|
With the Welty Health and Counseling Center now focusing on serving students through a holistic, integrated approach, our team is also setting our sights toward prevention work.
Every Wednesday, we are tabling at Cleveland Commons for “Wellness Wednesdays,” with a wellness theme and activity for students to interact with and learn from. We tested health literacy for Health Literacy Month and created a “Web of Support” for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, where students wrote encouraging messages to survivors of domestic violence.
We have also started the process of launching the CHECK IT program, a sexual bystander intervention program designed by Recognize Violence, Change Culture that brings together students on campus to create a consent culture. Students were nominated by staff, faculty and their peers to work with us to launch this program. Last month, we kicked off this work by holding a Launch Team Retreat (pictured) that engaged students in this work and prepared them for the work to come.
Be sure to read last week’s Wellness Column published in the Whitman Wire—“A Therapist’s Guide for the Yet Again Perplexed” by Rachel Wyman—and keep an eye out for these upcoming wellness events:
|
- Wellness Tea Party: Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. in the Welty Health and Counseling Center
- Wellness Wednesdays: every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cleveland Commons
- Destress Fest: Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom

Notice for Students: Taxable Benefits
|
Has the college reimbursed you for or paid a personal expense on your behalf? Did you know these payments could be taxable to you?
As of July 1, 2025, the college will review payments to or on behalf of students to determine if they are a taxable benefit. If taxable, the college will ensure tax is withheld, remitted and reported timely as required by IRS regulations. The college will do one of the following:
|
- Add the value of the benefit to the student’s gross taxable wages on student payroll
- Add the value of the tax due to the student’s account for reimbursement by the student
- Report the value of the benefit to the student on a Form 1099 at year end
|
Examples of personal benefits might be emergency payments, personal travel funding, college-paid or discounted housing, and college-paid or discounted meal plans.
Every individual’s tax situation is unique and will vary if you are a domestic vs. an international student. Please don't hesitate to reach out to the Accounting and Business Services department with questions at studentpayroll@whitman.edu.
