Status Update: Junior-Senior Village Apartments

Feature by: Tony Ichsan, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Services

A construction photo of the future Harvey Hall, taken on an overcast day.

Of the three new buildings scheduled to open in August, Harvey Hall (pictured) is the furthest along and is prominently visible from Boyer Avenue.

Scheduled to open for the Fall 2025 semester, the new junior-senior residential village will provide apartment-style housing for up to 212 Whitman students. These apartments will feature fully-functional kitchens, shared lounge spaces, an outdoor basketball half-court and outdoor green spaces, including native plants and a restored College Creek.

The project is on track for LEED Gold certification, with features such as a 160-kilowatt rooftop solar photovoltaic system, which will offset approximately 16.5% of the total anticipated electrical needs for the village. The project will also add eight much needed electrical vehicle charging stations. During construction, the general contractor is diverting 75% of construction waste away from landfills through recycling and reuse. Temporary access roads at the rear of each building are being maintained with recycled concrete to mitigate the muddy conditions.

Simultaneous work is now occurring on all three buildings.

Harvey Hall’s concrete composite slab has been installed and wood framing is completed for the first three floors with the fourth floor to begin shortly. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) and fire sprinkler systems will be roughed in after the framing is completed.

Stegner Hall’s first floor steel framing and concrete composite slab have been installed. Wood framing is continuing to the second floor with MEP and fire systems to follow.

Robart Hall has been excavated with sump and elevator pit waterproofed and MEP and fire systems installed. The perimeter wall footing and basement walls are formed. Concrete is being poured this week and framing will begin in February.

While the seasonal weather presents occasional challenges, the project management team continues to track the schedule with the goal of moving students into all three buildings in August.

The junior-senior housing lottery will take place from mid-February to early March. More information is available online.
