Visiting Writers Reading Series: Lia Purpura

The Visiting Writers Reading Series begins this week, with Lia Purpura on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at Kimball Theatre in Hunter Conservatory. (Flyer attached.)

Lia Purpura is the author of ten collections, including essays, poems and translations. A finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for “On Looking” (essays), her awards include Guggenheim, NEA and Fulbright Fellowships, as well as five Pushcart Prizes, the AWP Award and others.

Purpura’s work appears in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Orion, The Paris Review, The Georgia Review, Agni, Emergence and elsewhere. She has served as Writer in Residence at The University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Loyola University. Her newest collections are “It Shouldn’t Have Been Beautiful” (poems) and “All the Fierce Tethers” (essays).

The Visiting Writers Reading Series is sponsored by the Department of English, the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty, the Lawrence Parke Murphy and Robert Goldstein Trust, and by generous donations from the extended Whitman community.

Estate Gift To Create Endowed Computer Science Scholarship

A nearly $2 million gift from the estate of the late Mary Lee Masterson ’48 will establish a new endowed scholarship at Whitman College. Beginning the fall of 2025, the Mary Lee Masterson Scholarship Endowment will provide need-based financial assistance to students, with first preference going to juniors and seniors majoring in Computer Science. Students majoring in Mathematics or the natural sciences may also be considered.

Weekly Grief Support Group on Mondays

The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life will host Grieving@Whitman on Mondays from 12:10–12:50 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center All Faiths Room. The program provides space for those who are experiencing loss and grief who would welcome support from others. No weekly commitment required. (Flyer attached.)

 

Open Meeting for Faculty & Staff Tomorrow

An open meeting for faculty and staff will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 8–9 a.m. and again from 4–5 p.m. in Maxey Auditorium. The purpose of the meeting is to share updates on the college’s finances and related planning for this upcoming year and beyond.

Whitman’s Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) chapter was recently recognized as a Most Improved Chapter at the fraternity’s national 125th Anniversary Conclave. Chance Kelly ’25 (pictured, center), who currently serves as Whitman TKE’s Risk Manager and as Interfraternity Council’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility Officer, accepted the award. Whitman TKE also received a 100% Key Result Area Award.
