Do You Love Data? We Do!

By Penrose Library

Red and heart themed “Love Data Week” logo

Next week is Love Data Week, an international celebration of data that takes place every year during the week of Valentine’s Day. Look for two Love Data Week events on campus:

Faculty Lightning Talks About Data
Monday, Feb. 9, from 4–5 p.m.

Olin Hall, Room 129
A multidisciplinary group of faculty will give short talks about the data they use in their research, teaching or other investigations.

Where’s the Data? Finding Government Data in Interesting Times
Friday, Feb. 13, from 4–5 p.m.

Penrose Library, Room 313 (“the Fishbowl”)
Scholarly Communications Librarian Amy Blau will provide an overview of what has been happening with federal government data in the last year and share some suggestions for how data users—and all citizens—can track this information.

You can also explore many more Love Data Week online events from other institutions.

Psychology Professor Publishes Article on the Habituation of Disgust in Parents

Associate Professor of Psychology Tom Armstrong recently co-authored an article titled “Parents Develop Long-Term Disgust Habituation, but Only After Beginning To Wean Their Children” in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. Previous student-faculty collaborative research at Whitman had demonstrated how disgust resists habituation during prolonged exposure. This study qualifies that finding, showing that disgust undergoes habituation in parents through diaper changing, but only after babies begin eating solid food. The study was also featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
