Four Unforgettable Years at Whitman
|
Throughout her time at Whitman, recent grad Zoe Perkins ’25 shared her student experience in blogs, from making friends and finding community to an inside look at her first-year residence hall to being the host of her own radio show.
As graduation neared in May, Perkins shared that her four years at Whitman were unforgettable.
“I’ve been going back through my old Whittie Wisdom blog posts and reminiscing. In my first year in review blog, I wrote about the guarantee of good things to come. It wasn’t the kind of guarantee that’s given, but the kind that’s made. Whitman laid the groundwork for the ‘good things,’ and I made the most of it by, for example, joining the Interest House Community in my second year and studying abroad as a third year. In my final year, I kept the momentum going … To be honest, I’m not sure it will sink in that my time as a Whitman student is over until I’m not headed back to Walla Walla in the fall. While I’m excited to see what the future holds, I’ll miss this place and the wonderful people I found here. As I go out into the post-grad world, I know one thing is certain: Once a Whittie, always a Whittie.”

Whitties are sharing it all in our multimedia blog, Student Voices. Experience Whitman and Walla Walla through our students’ eyes! Read their personal stories, passions and perspectives—from navigating campus life to mentoring and career prep, learning a new language, sharing fun club activities, living in the Interest House Community and more.
All students are welcome to share their Whitman experiences. Staff and faculty are also invited to nominate students. We’d love to partner with various offices across campus to support more student stories. Nominations can be submitted using the Whittie Wisdom Nomination Form.

Classics Professor Published in Journal of Ancient Judaism
|
Assistant Professor of Classics Daniel Smith recently published a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Ancient Judaism. The essay, “A Palm Grove in Smyrna and the Negotiation of Judean Difference,” considers an inscription from second-century Smyrna (modern day Izmir, Turkey) that names a group of Jewish donors among those funding a new palm grove complex in the city. The article reads this ambivalent display of civic benefaction alongside Roman imperial discourses that described Judea as a wild land of palm trees and rebellion necessitating Roman cultivation after two failed revolts. Thinking with modern theorists of coloniality and diaspora, Smith argues for a multivalent social history of Jewish life in the Roman Empire.
