Learn About Kidney Transplantation on Saturday

An illustration of four raised hands, each holding a kidney.

More than 200 people in a 100-mile radius of Whitman College are on waitlists for a kidney transplant.

The University of Washington Transplant Team—one of the leading transplant centers in the United States—will offer a series of talks on the kidney transplantation process on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 1:30–5 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. (Bilingual flyer attached.)

The educational sessions will cover transplantation, living donation, social worker support, and insurance and finances. Whitman students will be on hand to assist in writing living donor profiles and to provide Spanish-language translation.

  • 1:30 p.m.: Welcome and introduction
  • 1:40 p.m.: Transplantation overview
  • 2:10 p.m.: Living donation
  • 2:40 p.m.: Personal stories
  • 3:35 p.m.: Social services; breakaway groups for living donor profiles
  • 4:05 p.m.: Finances
  • 4:35 p.m.: Questions
  • 4:50 p.m.: Closing remarks and further resources

Whitman College has its own kidney transplant success story to celebrate—Professor of Philosophy Julia Ireland received a kidney donation from Executive Assistant to the President Joanie Lucarelli. The story was profiled in the Spring 2024 issue of Whitman Magazine.

“When I asked my nephrologist which patients had the best outcomes,” says Ireland, “his answer startled me: those most well equipped to navigate the medical process of transplantation itself. This is extremely challenging in a rural context, and it is still more challenging for non-English speakers.”

If you are interested in learning more, please consider attending this informational event on Saturday. Advance registration is requested but not required to attend.
