Family Science Nights at Local Elementary Schools
|
This year, Whitman College hosted five Family Science Night events held at Walla Walla Public Schools (WWPS). The program reached 1093 local elementary students and family members, with the help of Whitman students and faculty, WWPS staff, Community Partners (Audubon Society, Farm to Schools, US Forest Service, Tri State Steelheaders, The Water Center, NASA) and other community volunteers. The leadership team included Associate Professor of Chemistry Nate Boland, Associate Professor of Chemistry Tim Machonkin, Science Outreach Consultant Heidi Chapin and three student interns, Quinn Christian ’24 (Biology), Claire Andrus ’24 (Chemistry/Anthropology) and MinhThu Tran ’26 (BBMB).
Several Whitman students involved in the program provided feedback on their experiences.
“Connecting with the broader local community should be a huge part of a liberal arts education,” said Caine Ryan ’26 (BBMB). “I think it’s really important that something like this exists!”
“Getting to share my passion with kids and inspire them to love science feels really meaningful to my education,” said Grace Remmert ’25 (Biology). “I think it is also really impactful on the kids as well.”
“It was so fun to interact with kids interested in science,” said Alicia Fogarty ’25 (BBMB/Classics). “At a college level we often get so in depth with the things we study that we forget the simple joy that science can bring people.”
