Junior-Senior Village Construction Update
|
Feature by: Tony Ichsan, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Services
|
The new junior-senior residential village, currently under construction thanks to the Upward Together campaign, will ultimately provide apartment-style housing for 212 students.
The project is on track for LEED Gold certification, with features such as a 160-kilowatt rooftop solar photovoltaic system, which will offset approximately 16.5% of the total anticipated electrical needs for the village. During construction, the general contractor is diverting 75% of construction waste from landfills through recycling and reuse.
The project management team has had a very busy summer, starting with collaborations with the City of Walla Walla to repair the water main on Boyer Avenue. Additionally, the college received two key approvals this summer: from the city, for the project site plan; and from the State of Washington Department of Ecology due to proximity to Mill Creek. On Boyer Avenue, aging sewer lines were replaced in support of the project.
Progress on the site accelerated after existing houses were removed, utilities were installed or rerouted, and College Creek was temporarily diverted around the site. Ongoing work on the site includes installation of utilities and grading of the site.
The basements for Harvey Hall and Stegner Hall are currently excavated and have received waterproofing, with concrete walls completed for Harvey Hall and Stegner Hall to follow. Robart Hall’s basement is currently seeing underground utility work in progress and will soon see the same concrete foundation as the other buildings.
The target completion date for the project is August 2025.

Professor Publishes Book on Family Vacation Homes
|
Michelle Janning, the Raymond and Elsie DeBurgh Chair of Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology, recently published the book “Investing in Enchantment: Memory, Market, and the Family Vacation Home” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2024). The book tells a new story about the cultural meanings and structural outcomes surrounding family vacation homes today, focusing on how a desire for authenticity and magical family connectedness has made family vacation homes a compelling site to examine social roles, relationships, and class and race inequalities. Janning spent five years gathering and analyzing 60+ homeowner and expert interviews and surveys, field observations from multiple hospitality industry ethnographic site studies, and content from news and lifestyle media and real estate publications.
