Turning Competition Into Community

Patrick Mulikuza throws a frisbee past the camera.

College is all about trying and learning new things, and Patrick Mulikuza ’27 dove right in during his first year at Whitman! Joining Whitman’s Ultimate Frisbee team changed everything. Despite his inexperience, Mulikuza found more than a sports team. He found community.

“My favorite part of being on Whitman’s Ultimate Frisbee team was how friendly and eager everyone was.” says Mulikuza. “I realized that Whitman’s athletic culture isn’t just competitive; it’s about community and unconditional acceptance no matter your experience level … It is a space where learning, laughing and growing are just as important as winning games.”

Read more about how his teammates met every fumble with patience, humor and encouragement.

All students, regardless of skill level, are encouraged to participate in Whitman’s intramural and club sports. Browse through the options and sign up for a sport that interests you.

Whitties are sharing it all in our multimedia blog, Student Voices. Experience Whitman and Walla Walla through our students’ eyes! Read their personal stories, passions and perspectives—from navigating campus life to mentoring and career prep, learning a new language, sharing fun club activities, living in the Interest House Community and more.

All students are welcome to share their Whitman experiences. Staff and faculty are also invited to nominate students. We’d love to partner with various offices across campus to support more student stories. Nominations can be submitted using the Whittie Wisdom Nomination Form.
